Court Jester

A court jester had no official rank but was allowed to listen, suggest, ask questions and give opinions on almost anything.

He could sail very close to the wind, but had to be wise and not overstep the mark. He had to be very sensitive to the political and social trends of the time.

The role gave recognition to the fact that everyone is able to see and yet at the same time be blind – we don’t know what we don’t know.

Kings knew that their blind spots could be highly risky for them; so they took the risk of employing a jester to help them see.
